Canadians will Gamble over 200 million in 2014 NHL Playoffs

This year Canadians are going to spend approximately 200 million online, betting on the Stanley Cup Playoffs.  The survey was conducted by the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC).

Canadians have surpassed the bets placed on Football, as it shows the love of the game here in Canada.  Hockey is truly Canada’s game despite the fact that there is only one Canadian team in the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs which are the Montreal Canadians.

The survey was conducted between March 3-7 for RGC and sampled 1,012 Canadians.  It also noted that Canadians bet more on Hockey than on the NFL this season (12% vs. 9%).

There are various ways Canadians chooses to place their bets.  The most popular was through hockey pools, followed by online wagering and sports lottery tickets which are sold at retailers.

The most popular generation of young adults who bet on hockey were the 18-34 age bracket.  27% of that group was planning to bet on the playoffs.

The main cause for concern is young adults generating gambling problems at an early age.  The RGC cited that the younger adult category tends to chase back their losses and this could have a negative impact in the long run.
